Making Community: Implications of Hybridity and Coalescence at Morton Village

Abstract Recent investigations of Morton Village, a Mississippian and Oneota community formed following migration into the central Illinois River valley around AD 1300, focus on evaluating social context for remarkable violence evidenced at adjacent Norris Farms 36 cemetery. Here, we use concepts thirdspace hybridity to examine three areas village life: creation physical structure village, ritual, foodways. Within these areas, identify transformations practices that support interpretation villagers were engaged in formation coalescent community.
